before it came the world was on fire

now in the smoke we have lost our way

wearing a veil

hides the grimaces we cannot share

and the smiling eyes

are momentary expressions masking

some prophetic inkling

that nothing remains the same

anger at our failings and futility

sorrow at our loss of connectedness

latex diminishing our sense of touch

exposed

we are vulnerable
